6 Proven Ways to Increase Click-Through Rate (CTR) on Google

Entering the digital marketing world can often feel like moving to a new country where you don’t speak the language or understand the native customs – CTR is one of those things.

CTR, or Click-Through Rate, refers to the proportion of people that click on your links compared to the number of people that see them (impressions). It works as a measure to see how effective your marketing strategy is at drawing customers towards your product (be that social media, website, or landing pages).

Given that Google is the biggest search engine on the internet, accounting for around 80% of all searches worldwide, it’s common practice to adjust your digital marketing strategy to cater to Google specifically. This is known as SEO (Search Engine Optimisation).

With that said, here are SIX proven ways to increase CTR on Google.

1. Make Your Title Tag Interesting and To The Point

Your title tag is the blue title that you see in the Google SERPS (search engine results page) and it’s your first impression!

If it’s not interesting or relevant to what’s on that web page, no one is going to click on it. But you’d be surprised what counts as interesting on the internet.

People aren’t looking for elaborate, poetic titles that belong in a literature analysis class – that’s just confusing for most people.

No, they only want to know what you are offering and why they should care.

2. Know Your Keywords

Keywords or keyphrases are the words they people type into Google and other search engines to find what they are looking for.

There are two main types of keywords: short-tail keywords and long-tail keywords.

Make sure your main keyword is dotted around your piece (for example ours is CTR) but don’t stuff your piece with it – Google doesn’t like that!

3. Make Sure To Add Links

Google only wants to promote sites with authority. How do they know you have authority? By using links.

Having external and internal links will let Google know your site is legitimate and boost your CTR.

But remember, we’re not talking about just any old links – links should be of a high quality, relevant and trustworthy.

4. Use Emotion

If your title makes people feel something, they are more likely to click on it. So tap into your audience’s emotional touch points and speak to them.

5. Don’t Forget Your Meta Description

The meta description tells Google and users what your web page is about and gives your target audience a sneak peek at what to expect.

Make sure you add your main keyword to the meta description, so it shows up in search engines.

Again, if it’s relevant to the user, the higher your CTR will be!

6. Add Images

No one likes going on text-only sites. Especially in 2022 when everything online is highly visual – and needs to be in order to grab people’s attention.

Add images to attract and keep attention to your site.
